Co-op Student of the Year Award

Announcement & Instructions

The Cooperative and Experiential Education Division of the American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE / CEED) is seeking nominations for outstanding co-op students employed during the 2014 Calendar Year (Jan. - Dec.). The winning student will receive a cash award, and will be invited to the 2015 CIEC Conference to receive their award. All nominated students will receive a letter and certificate of recognition for their national nomination.

Eligibility:

  • A member of CEED must nominate the student.
  • Nominated students must be enrolled in a four-year / five-year undergraduate program.
  • The CEED member can only nominate 1 student for each award.
  • Nominated students must be registered in a cooperative education program meeting the traditional definition of multiple work terms.
  • Student can be majoring and working in any discipline recognized by ABET (Accrediting Board for Engineering and Technology).
  • Nominated students must have completed two or more work sessions or be in process of completing the second work session at the time of nomination.
  • Students who complete one-time internship positions do not qualify for this award.

Award:

  • The winning student will receive a $750 cash award.
  • The winning student will receive a recognition plaque.
  • The winning student will be invited to attend the CIEC Conference in Savannah, GA to receive their award.
  • Two nights stay at the CIEC Conference
  • One day CIEC Conference registration
  • Up to three additional meal tickets at CIEC Conference Awards Ceremony for guests

The winning student's supervisor or the employer representative will receive:

  • One day CIEC Conference registration

All nominated students will receive:

  • Letter and certificate of recognition for their national nomination.

Nomination and Selection Process:

STEP ONE: Email a nomination packet to Angie Chrestman. Complete packets must be emailed as an Adobe PDF file and include the following in the specified order:

  • 2014 CEED Student of the Year Nomination Cover Sheet
  • The Statement of Support from the student's employer
  • The Statement of Support from the student's college / university
  • The Statement from the nominated student
  • Student's most recent resume.

THE DEADLINE TO SUBMIT A NOMINATION PACKET IS NOVEMBER 3, 2014

STEP TWO: Three to five co-op professionals who may represent the academic or industry sector(s) will judge the nomination packets.

STEP THREE: Award Committee Members will be sent all nomination packets.

STEP FOUR: Award Committee Members must respond with their recommendations by December 5, 2014.

The student receiving the highest rankings from the Award Committee Members will be selected as Co-op Student of the Year. All nominated students, nominating schools and employers will be notified of the winner by December 12, 2014.

Instructions For Employer Statement:

Statement should be two pages, typed, and double-spaced.

Topics to consider include:

o The student's work-related duties, quantity of work, and quality of work.
o Examples of the student's initiative or creative or original work.
o Examples of how the student was challenged during their co-op assignment.
o Any published papers, presentations or other formal presentations of their work.
Please do not include copies.
o Any recognition or awards from the company.
o The student's involvement in the community.
o The student's involvement in improving the company co-op program.
o The overall impact of this student on the department or company.

Please do not include additional documents.

Instructions for University Statement :

Statement should be two pages, typed, and double-spaced.

Topics to consider include:

o The student's academic performance.
o Examples of the student's initiative or creative or original work.
o Any recognition, honors or awards from the university or other organizations.
o Any leadership positions.
o The student's involvement on campus and in the community.
o The student's service to co-op locally, regionally or nationally.
o The student's relationship with the college / department.
o The student's character.

Please do not include additional documents.

Instructions for Student Statement:

Must include a copy of most recent resume. Should not exceed two pages.

Statement should be two pages, typed, and double-spaced.

Topics to consider include:

o How co-op experiences have impacted college and future career.
o Future career goals.
o Achievements, awards, honors and self initiative both on the job and in school.
o Contributions to the employer, school and community.

Please do not include additional documents.
