1. GMI Engineering & Management Institute became Kettering University on January 1, 1998 in recognition of the special role Charles F. (Boss) Kettering had in the establishment of the college in 1919 and throughout its formative years as GMI.
2. The name Kettering has been synonymous with cooperative education since the early twentieth century. Co-op experience is integral to the education of all Kettering University students.
